Roar confirm A-League coaching structure for 2021/22 season

Scott Guyett

Brisbane Roar has today confirmed the addition of some new faces to its A-League coaching structure for the upcoming 2021/22 season.

In full-time positions, ex-professional Scott Guyett and former Matildas staff member Paul Jones will bring experience and pedigree to their respective roles as Assistant Coach and Goalkeeper Coach.

Brisbane-raised Guyett, who enjoyed a long playing career in England, has returned to Australia after spending more than a decade at Premier League side Crystal Palace.

The 45-year-old has been working in an on-field coaching capacity with the London club’s first team alongside his duties as the Head of Sport Science and Strength & Conditioning, and in June 2021 was a recipient of the Palace Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Contribution.

Jones joins the Roar after building a distinguished resume through two spells with the Matildas and more than 20 years working with the Australian Institute of Sport.

He attended three FIFA Women’s World Cups as a coach for the likes of Lydia Williams and Melissa Barbieri while in the national team setup and has been heavily involved in the development of several of Australia’s finest goalkeepers, male and female.

“I am very pleased to welcome Scott and Paul to our coaching ranks for the upcoming campaign,” Head Coach Warren Moon said.

“Both have achieved great things in their careers to date, working directly with elite Premier League players and international footballers in high-quality environments. They will be brilliant assets for the Club heading into a hugely exciting season.”

Pouria Nabi has moved from Performance Analyst to Assistant Coach alongside Guyett, while A-League legend Shane Smeltz has also linked up with the Roar on a part-time basis to provide specialist striker coaching and guidance.

“Shane knows a lot about what it takes to be a top striker and how to transfer those skills, which is going to be great for the group and especially the younger players coming through like Cyrus Dehmie,” Moon said.
