Brisbane Roar continued their strong start to the 25/26 Isuzu UTE A-League Pre-Season with a 3-1 victory over Newcastle Jets in Lismore on Saturday afternoon.
Michael Ruhs bagged a brace, while Henry Hore was also on target as Michael Valkanis’ side prevailed in front of over 3,000 supporters at a very wet Oakes Oval.
Ruhs opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he fired a Nathan Amanatidis cross home from close range on the end of a sweeping team move.
Roar’s new number 19, who also found the back of the against Auckland the week prior completed his double in the 35th minute when he forced a turnover near halfway before charging clear of the Jets defence and coolly slotting a finish into the bottom right hand corner.
Roar’s dominance continued in the opening minute of the second stanza when Hore pounced onto a loose ball inside the area and turned home his sides third of the afternoon.
The Jets pulled one back via an own goal in the 61st minute but it proved to be too little too late as Roar claimed a 3-1 win.
Saturday’s win builds on an impressive performance in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against reigning Premiers, Auckland with Valkanis’ side remaining undefeated in his first pre-season at the helm.
Those in attendance got a first glimpse at Roar’s new number nine, Chris Long, who entered the match as a 77th minute substitute for his appearance in orange.
Meanwhile Joeys defender, Charlie Parkin started for the second week running putting in another strong shift at the back while his Young Roar teammates, Noah Maieroni and James Durrington both played a part off the bench.
Next up for Roar is a clash against NPL Queensland league leaders, Moreton City Excelsior at South Pine Sports Complex on Tuesday, August 19 (7:30pm KO) before a meeting with Central Coast Mariners at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Sunday, August 24 (1:30pm KO)
