Match report: Roar v Reds

Brisbane Roar has fallen just short in its return Hyundai A-League fixture, going down 1-0 to Adelaide United at Cbus Super Stadium on Sunday night.

The Roar created the game’s better chances and dominated large portions of the contest, but couldn’t recover the deficit created by an early header from Kristian Opseth.

Paul Izzo made a number of strong saves to deny the Roar at both ends, denying a Jay O’Shea free-kick in the first-half before keeping out the home side on a number of occasions in the second stanza.

Opseth’s close-range header was enough for the visitors to take the points, but new Head Coach Warren Moon says his side will take the positives from the contest in preparation for three consecutive games in Sydney to round out the regular season.

“We’re disappointed, but apart from the first 10 minutes where we started slowly, we were pretty good and we controlled the game. We created chances but unfortunately on the day we just weren’t good enough to take them,” Head Coach Warren Moon said.

“We played well, we created plenty of chances to win the game. We’ll take the positives and we’ll try and improve on that so when we’re in those positions again, we win those games.”

New boys Matthew Ridenton and Danny Kim both made their debuts for Brisbane Roar with the latter’s introduction in the second half also his first minutes in the Hyundai A-League.

The Roar now head to Sydney ahead of a 10-day gap before its next fixture against Melbourne Victory at Bankwest Stadium on Wednesday, 29 July (7:30pm kick-off).
