Roar draw with Wellington

Brisbane Roar take home a 1-1 draw after denying Wellington Phoenix a victory with a late goal by Shea Connors at Sky Stadium on Saturday afternoon in what was Brisbane Roar’s first away trip to New Zealand since Wellington Phoenix entered the Liberty A-League last year.

Indiah-Paige Riley received a yellow card in the 25th minute which resulted in a free kick given to Wellington, seeing Michaela Foster put a ball in for Marisa Van Der Meer to score with a header.

Connors used her speed and broke through Wellington defence in the 33rd minute to have a shot at goal, but the ball went straight to the hands of Brianna Edwards.

Brisbane’s Hensley Hancuff made a tremendous save in the 38th minute, diving to her right after Emily Clegg had a shot from outside the goal box.

Connors outran the Wellington defence in the 80th minute after a ball was put over by skipper Ayesha Norrie, seeing her bury the ball to the bottom left corner to strip the victory away from Phoenix and level the score line 1-1.

The Roar take on ladder leaders Western United at home game next Saturday at Perry Park in Round 17 of the Liberty A-League.

Garrath McPherson’s side remains in the hunt for a finals position and will look to capitalise on the remaining points up for grabs.

Brisbane Roar will commemorate Larissa Crummer’s 100 Liberty A-Leagues game this Saturday with a short presentation post-game.

Catch the action on Paramount+ and 10Play at 2:00pm AEST.
