Roar duo, Charlie Parkin & Rhys Williams have been selected for a 28-player squad for a Joeys domestic training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
The five-day camp – being held from 6-10 January – will provide Maloney and his staff with the opportunity to work intensively with a broad group of mainly domestic-based players eligible for selection in 2025, in what shapes as a busy year of activity for some of Australia’s most talented young players.
The Subway Joeys will participate in the AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2025TM following their successful qualification in October 2024.
The U17 continental tournament – which serves as qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025TM – will be contested between 3-20 April 2025, with the top eight (8) teams earning their place at the age group’s showpiece event.
The Official Draw for the AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2025TM is scheduled to take place on 23 January at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), where the Subway Joeys will learn their opponents in the group stage.
Subway Joeys’ Head Coach, Brad Maloney said the training camp would lay the groundwork for a big year of football ahead.
“We’ve been building nicely as a group towards this year, which will be significant for our program with two major tournaments on offer – something I know the players and staff are excited about,” Maloney said.
“I was very happy with what we were able to achieve as an extended playing group across the course of 2024, which focused on progressively building towards the U17 Asian Cup and ultimately, U17 FIFA World Cup qualification.
“Bringing everyone together at a facility like the Australian Institute of Sport is the perfect environment to continue that growth and to support the work we want to do technically, tactically and physically to begin what is an important year in the development of this talented group of players,” Maloney concluded.
As this camp occurs outside of a Men’s FIFA International window, several players were unavailable for selection due to A-League Men or overseas club commitments.
