Brisbane Roar has ended the Wingate Properties Townsville Football Cup with a 2-0 loss to Sydney FC, the club’s first defeat of the pre-season.
Despite starting the stronger of the two sides, it was the Sky Blues who took the lead against the run of play in the 25th minute when Alex Brosque provided Corey Gamiero the ideal cross to head home from close range.
Sydney added their second fifteen minutes from full time when substitute Marc Janko’s powerful strike from 20 yards beat Michael Theo in the Brisbane goal.
Brisbane held the majority of possession throughout the 90 minutes but failed to properly trouble the Sydney FC and was held scoreless for the first time this pre-season.
The result means Sydney FC were named Townsville Football Cup Champions.
