Brisbane Roar suffered a tough 5-2 defeat away from home against Melbourne City on Sunday afternoon.
Despite a strong start for Alex Smith’s squad, the hosts proved themselves the better side in Sunday’s Round 16 clash.
Kijah Stephenson scored her first goal of the 25/26 season with a spectacular strike into the top left corner after a fumble from the goalkeeper in the 8th minute. The 25-year-old was back in the action just five minutes later, taking a touch and burying the ball into the back of the net to give Roar a 2-0 lead.
After a corner set piece, Rebekah Stott got her head to the ball to put City on the board. The comeback was sparked moments later when Holly McNamara beat Roar defence and got around Chloe Lincoln to level the score 2-2.
Returning from the break, City were fired up and it did not take long for Bryleeh Henry to fire away their third of the afternoon and hand the hosts the lead in the 48th minute.
After a nice build-up from Aideen Keane, Deven Jackson scored City’s fourth to extend their lead before Keane made it five to secure the three points and first place on the Ninja A-League ladder.
Up next, Roar return home to face Sydney FC next Friday night.
