Brisbane Roar has suffered their first defeat of the National Youth League season, losing 1-0 to Melbourne Victory at Goodwin Park.

Despite plenty of senior team experience on the park for both teams, it was a cagey start to the round two fixture with the healthy crowd at Goodwin Park waiting 17 minutes for either side to register their first shot on target.

Roar captain Ross Archibald and Hyundai A-League squad member Rocco Visconte-s strikes both blocked by the quick-to-react Victory defence.

In the 28th minute, Melbourne managed their first meaningful attempt at goal when Isaka Cernak sent an ambitious free-kick over the crossbar from 20 yards out.

The away team held onto the momentum pushing forward and took the lead just before the break – Andrew Nabbout-s cross found Jake Nakic on the edge of the area and the Victory skipper drove the ball home from the edge of the penalty area.

Nick Fitzgerald almost gave the Roar an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, latching on a well-timed through-ball from George Lambadaridis but sent his dipping shot high of the crossbar.

The midfield duo continued to find themselves involved in the action as the match wore on – Fitzgerald combining with substitute Kwame Yeboah but again firing high with twenty minutes left to play before Lambadaridis went close with a free kick over the wall in the 83rd minute.

The Roar continued to find it hard to maintain fluency with injury-forced disruptions in the second half and they couldn-t find an equaliser despite the five minutes of injury time.
