Brisbane Roar has been invited by Wellington Phoenix to play a pre-season match at CBUS Super Stadium today (Tuesday, 31 July), behind closed doors.

The game will be the third 2018/19 pre-season fixture for John Aloisi’s side and a first against Hyundai A-League opposition.

Following a positive start to pre-season preparations the match against the New Zealand-based outfit will provide more value match practice as Brisbane prepare for its FFA Cup Round of 32 clash against Melbourne City at Dolphin Stadium on Tuesday, 7 August.

“We are fortunate to live in a state that is attractive for many Hyundai A-league teams to visit. Over the years, we have seen Western Sydney Wanderers, Sydney FC and now Wellington hold camps in Queensland. During these camps, our club has been invited to play practice matches against them,” Managing Director David Pourre said.

“It’s important to note a couple of items about visiting teams.

“Firstly, when these Hyundai A-League clubs organise a pre-season match in our state, we are their guests. Therefore, these clubs choose the venue to host a match and direct terms on which a practice match will be played.

“Our club is designated as the visiting team for these fixtures and on most occasions, these clubs choose to hold the match behind closed doors.”

Throughout the 2018 pre-season, BRFC will be playing a variety of teams from around Queensland and across the Hyundai A-League competition which will be open to the local football community and our supporters.

Recently the Roar has played against local FQPL team Logan Lightning and over the coming weeks and months the club will be playing National Premier Leagues Queensland teams and a Brisbane Premier League select side, with more details to be confirmed in the near future.

BRFC endeavours to have as many open pre-season games as possible, however we must respect those Hyundai A-League clubs who wish to play behind closed door especially as their guests.

“We’re often asked about streaming pre-season games live. For full transparency – Fox Sports hold all streaming rights throughout the entire season including pre-season. Where we can, our club will reproduce footage where we can throughout pre-season within the guidelines imposed upon us,” Pourre concluded.
