Roar Trio Named in Joeys Squad for ASEAN U16 Boys’ Championship

Brisbane Roar trio, Quinn MacNicol, Rhys Williams and Charlie Parkin have been named in the Joeys squad to compete at the ASEAN U16 Boys’ Championship in Indonesia later this month.

The tournament – formerly known as the AFF Championship – features 12 Members from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Football Federation.

Australia has been drawn in Group C for the tournament, alongside Malaysia, Thailand and Timor-Leste and will play all their Group Stage fixtures out of Sriwedari Stadium.

The 2024 edition of the Championship – which is also contested at U-19 level – will be Australia’s ninth appearance, having previously won the tournament in 2008 and 2016.

Quinn MacNicol became Roar’s youngest ever player aged just 15 when he debuted against Newcastle Jets in the Australia Cup Round of 32 and goalscorer when he went on to find back of the net against Sydney United 58 in the following round.

The midfielder, who made two A-League appearances throughout the 2023/24 campaign earned a Joeys call-up in April, scoring in both matches for Australia in games against Switzerland and Inter Milan.

Rhys Williams, who also represented the Joeys in Italy in April is a promising attacking midfielder, formerly of Moreton Bay United who’s impressed in the club’s NPL set up in the first half of the 2024 season.

Towering defender, Charlie Parkin earns a call up after playing a key role in the heart of defence for Roar’s league leading U23 side with the 15-year-old also having trained with the club’s A-League side.

Parkin also arrived at Roar from Moreton Bay United where he was crowned as Football Queensland’s Junior Male Player of the Year in 2023.

Head Coach Brad, Maloney will bring together his squad for a brief pre-camp in Indonesia prior to the Subway Joeys’ first game on Sunday, 23 June against Thailand. Australia will then face Malaysia (26 June) and Timor-Leste (29 June), as they look to secure a spot in the tournament’s Semi Finals by topping their Group.
