Roar Women fit & firing ahead of Jets clash

Our Roar Women are looking to continue their strong away form when they take the field on Thursday night against the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium (6:30pm KO QLD time).

Having come off a bye in Round 4, the Roar are heading into the clash feeling fit, healthy and sure to create selection headaches for Head Coach Mel Andreatta.

“We’re really looking forward to playing in Newcastle – the Jets are a strong team. We had the bye the previous round so everyone is fit, fresh and ready to go,” Captain and key defensive pillar Claire Polkinghorne said ahead of the trip south.

Creating opportunities in attack has not been a problem for the Roar Women this season, and despite only scoring two goals in three matches, Polkinghorne is confident in her side.

“The first few games we’ve created a lot of chances and haven’t been able to convert them,” Polkinghorne continued.

“We’ve been working on our finishing and just getting that final ball and that final shot right. The pleasing thing is we are creating a lot of chances and we’ve just got to put them away.”

After analysing the Jets opening matches, which includes two wins and a loss, the Roar believe they have what it takes to break down the Newcastle defence.

“They are a very organised team and they’ve got some very strong players all over the pitch. We’ve been working on the way that we want to break them down and tweaking a few little things, but just building on our performances in the first three rounds,” Polkinghorne concluded.

Picking up maximum points on the road became a key cornerstone of the Roar’s run to the 2017/18 Premiership, and having already picked up their first win on the road this season, the Roar are hoping to continue their strong form away from home.
