Roar Women soar into top four

Our Roar Women have come from behind to soar into the Westfield W-League top four at New Years.

A trademark header from Clare Polkinghorne combined with Hollie Palmer’s first ever Westfield W-League goal got the Roar over the line in a dominant performance against the Jets at Lions Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Roar dominated from whistle to whistle, rarely allowing the Jets to fire at Mackenzie Arnold’s goal while peppering the net at the other end of the park.

Jake Goodship’s side held more than 65% possession throughout the contest, hitting the target on 18 occasions with strong goalkeeping & a little luck keeping the Jets within touching distance.

Both Carson Pickett & Tameka Yallop hit the crossbar, while the ever-dangerous Hayley Raso also reguarly went close to finding the back of the net.

“We created a lot of chances, probably could have scored a few more which is something we’ll build on,” Polkinghorne said post-match.

“We knew we would have majority of possession and we were able to create a lot of chances. We’ll want to be finishing a lot more of those as the season moves on.

“There’s plenty of things to work on, but there were also plenty of positives.”

The skipper also said a rare goal was the culmination of a fair bit of attention paid on set pieces on the training park.

“It doesn’t happen often [scoring], so I’ll take it,” she continued.

“We had a focus on set pieces – we hadn’t scored off one so we knew it was an area we could improve and it was good to see we scored from one.”

The Roar have little time to rest on their laurels with the next home game just a matter of days away on Thursday, 2 January at Dolphin Stadium (6:30pm KO). Get your tickets HERE.
