Two early goals through Tameka Butt and a Katrina Gorry wonder strike got the match off to the perfect start for the Roar, who were forced to defend a thin lead late in the match after a brave Adelaide fight back.
Head Coach Mel Andreatta was pleased with the first-half performance and says the side must strive to consistently play to that standard.
“The players know the first half was the bench mark and were happy with the positive starts we are making to matches.”
“What we need to do now is continue that into the second half of the match next week.”
“Adelaide to their credit really went for it late in the match, they were chasing the result and took more risks, and were more opportunistic.”
Gorry was once again dominant in midfield throughout the 90 minutes and opened the scoring just minutes after kick-off with a gem of a strike from outside the area.
Butt’s goal from a delightful cross from Gorry doubled the lead less than ten minutes later. Brisbane’s defence remained resolute and superb goalkeeping from Mackenzie Arnold ensured the Roar’s wall was not breached before half-time.
Allira Toby was injected into the game at the break and scored moments after entering the contest, providing a constant threat for the Reds’ defence for the remainder of the game.
Two goals in quick succession from the Reds set up a nervy ending in front of 4,515 fans at Suncorp Stadium but the Roar Women held on for their third victory of the Westfield W-League 2016/17 season.
Goals
4’: Katrina Gorry receives the ball from outside the 18-yard box and it finishes in the top left corner. 1-0
12’: A cross into for the goal by Katrina Gorry is perfectly passed to Tameka Butt and she puts it past Campbell at close range. 2-0
49’: A great diagonal ball finds the run of Allira Toby and the ball rolls into the back of the net. 3-0
59’: A bit of miscommunication in the Brisbane Roar defence and Adrianna Jones capitalises on the mistake. 3-1
74’: Clare Polkinghorne brings an Adelaide player down in the box, Sofia Huerta converts from the spot. 3-2
Talking Point
After being three goals up, the Roar were forced to valiantly defend after letting Adelaide United back into the game with two goals in the space of 15 minutes, eventually holding on for an important 3-2 victory.

Brisbane Roar Head Coach MEL ANDREATTA: “Their [Adelaide] direct play caused us more problems in the second half but also they changed the way they defended which presented another challenge for us in controlling possession in the middle third.”
