Scarpelli: We don’t want to get complacent

Brisbane Roar defender Leah Scarpelli said the playing group do not want to get too complacent after a stellar win at home as they look forward to Unite Round against Newcastle Jets in pursuit of another three points.

“We were so excited, definitely a long time coming. We really enjoyed it, we just don’t want to get too complacent, like I said it was a long time coming, we worked hard for it, and we were building up to that moment, Scarpelli said.

The 22-year-old shared her thoughts on the way the squad are starting to play into Head Coach Alex Smith’s playing style and how this was displayed in Sunday’s win at Perry Park.

“We’ve finally started to adapt to his style. Alex’s style is very simple, yet effective but we really enjoy it as a team, and it definitely showed in our performance last weekend against Wellington.”

Scarpelli has been a starter for all 11 games so far, and the American is pleased to be getting minutes since joining the squad at the start of the 2023/24 season.

“So grateful to be getting the minutes I’m getting, obviously we’re just building as a team, still learning every week but it helps to have the people next to me.”

She looks forward to a big weekend of A-League action at Unite Round as the squad travel down to Sydney determined to bring home another three points.

“So excited, definitely going to be great to have all the teams in the A-League be brought together in Sydney for Unite Round and hoping to get those three points!”
