Brisbane Roar attacker, Sharn Freier has received her first CommBank Matildas call up after being added to the Twenty-three player squad for the upcoming international with Mexico hosted at Toyota Field, San Antonio.
Freier is in line to make her international debut after a breakout season in the Liberty A-League that saw her score three goals and pick up five assists for Brisbane.
The 22-year-old, who has played locally for Moreton Bay United and Brisbane City has created 42 chances this season a number bettered only by Sydney FC duo Mackenzie Hawkesby and Cortnee Vine.
Freier replaces former Roar teammate Katrina Gorry in the squad after the midfielder was forced to withdraw following an ankle injury sustained while playing for West Ham United.
Freier will link up with Tameka Yallop in the squad along with a number of former Brisbane stars including: Mackenzie Arnold, Clare Polkinghorne, Hayley Raso, Kaitlyn Torpey, Aivi Luik, Cortnee Vine Emily Gielnik and Winonah Heatley.
Freier said to have the opportunity to represent her country was a dream come true.
“It’s a huge honour, I think it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and something I’ve always strived for,” Freier said.
“To be able to get the call up it’s exciting, it’s pretty special and yeah I’m super stoked.
“I feel like I’ve been working hard for the last couple of years and I think my confidence has been growing so I feel like to be rewarded with an opportunity like this, it’s very exciting.”
Australia will take on the recent Concacaf W Gold Cup semi-finalists on Tuesday, 9 April 2024 (local) / Wednesday, 10 April 2024 (AEST) in their first meeting in thirteen years.
