Steinmann pleased with Roar’s pre-season progress

New signing Matti Steinmann believes Brisbane Roar are making strong progress on the pitch as they get set for a six-week sprint towards the new season.

The midfielder joined five team-mates on the scoresheet in a 6-0 friendly win over Capalaba FC on Wednesday night.

The match provided more valuable minutes in the legs for Warren Moon’s men less than two months out from their A-League Men’s opener against Melbourne City on 19 November.

“Going into a few days off, we wanted to have a good shift,” Steinmann said of the mid-week match.

“I think we did well, especially in the first half. Scored some good goals, good patterns. I think we’re building up pretty well.

“The first few weeks were good for the boys getting used to playing football again after a long off-season. We’ll build on the sharpness with a bit more conditioning. I think we’re in a good way to be ready for the first game.”

Steinmann’s goal at the Gold Coast Sports Precinct added to the one he scored in the FFA Cup victory against Peninsula Power a fortnight ago.

While happy to contribute at any stage, the German hopes his scoring form can continue into the full home-and-away campaign.

“I just want to score my first A-League goal, I’d be happy with that,” he laughed.

“But it’s a good feeling to score. I don’t usually score that often. So it was a good feeling after the FFA Cup and this one as well.

“Even though it was just a friendly, when you don’t score often you take every goal, even in training!

“Hopefully I can keep it going in the season more importantly.”

As for the four-day break he and his team-mates are now enjoying, Steinmann said his plans were to rest and prepare for a big period.

“It’s going to be tough now, but I’m buzzing for it.”
