Brisbane Roar fans are uniting behind a bid to secure Queensland footballing legend Clare Polkinghorne a statue outside Suncorp Stadium.
Launched by the Roar Supporters Federation, the #Statue4Clare campaign gathered more than 1100 signatures online before being relaunched as a Queensland Parliament e-petition.
With sponsorship from The Honourable Jess Pugh MP, Minister for Mt Ommaney, the petition will be heard in Parliament following the 29 August closing date.
#Statue4Clare seeks to recognise Polkinghorne’s contribution to the game as the most-capped Queenslander footballer of all time at international level, male or female.
The long-term Roar skipper is a two-time W-League Grand Final winner, two-time Julie Dolan Medal recipient and 15-year Matildas stalwart of more than 130 caps.
As a role model for youngsters, a statue for the Brisbane-born fan-favourite is seen as a way to inspire young girls in particular in the lead-up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup on home soil in 2023.
