Sydney FC come out on top at Suncorp Stadium

Brisbane Roar were defeated by Sydney FC 2-0 at Suncorp Stadium in a Monday night clash that confirmed the end of the road for their finals hopes.

Brisbane showed character and consistent effort throughout the 90 minutes, but it was not enough to keep the sky blues away.

In the 34th minute, Robert Mak and Joe Lolley shared a one-two combination in the box which saw Mak in perfect position to tuck the ball away in the bottom right corner.

Kai Trewin split Sydney defence in the 42nd minute to find Taras Gomulka in front of goal for an opportunity to equalise. Gomulka struck the ball directly to Andrew Redmayne’s chest.

Jez Lofthouse put a ball over to Stefan Scepovic for a header in the 60th minute that forced a great save by Redmayne.

The deflection saw Jay O’Shea take a strike in the 18-yard-box that was stopped by the Sydney goalkeeper.

Joe Lolley made yet another great assist in the 77th minute where he crossed the ball to Adam Le Fondre to put it away to the right side of goal, just outside of Jordan Holmes’ reach.

This secured the three points for Sydney FC and further cemented their top six spot in the Isuzu UTE A-League competition.

Interim Head Coach Nick Green is proud of his team’s efforts at Suncorp but believes their performance was just not good enough against Sydney.

“Obviously it wasn’t to be tonight, the lads gave everything for the cause. We’ve left it late,” Green said.

“We got an opportunity tonight to fight for the three points to potentially take it into finals. It’s disappointing, we put everything on the line,” he said.

“All in all, just fell short, not good enough over the course of a season, that’s reality.”

Brisbane Roar face Melbourne Victory in their last round of the Isuzu UTE A-League season at AAMI Park where they will look to finish their season on a high note.

“We’ll go next week, and we’ll go to win. There’s one more game to go, and we’ll give everything we can to go and get the three points and let’s see where we finish up,” Green said.
