Brandon Borrello’s match-winning goals may be headlining Brisbane Roar’s current run of form but that suits goalkeeper Jamie Young just fine.
Brisbane-born Young, who joined the Roar in the Hyundai A-League off-season after 13 years in the United Kingdom, kept a clean sheet in last Wednesday’s 1-0 away win over Urawa Red Diamonds and in yesterday’s 1-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.
With regular shotstopper Michael Theo expected to miss at least another week with a groin strain picked up in the 2-2 draw against Perth Glory in Round 19, Young said the clean sheets gave him confidence heading into a busy period of five games in 20 days.
He wasn’t, however, complacent going into this Sunday’s away fixture to the in-form Sydney FC.
“It does put your mind at ease [keeping a clean sheet] for a bit but Jason [Kearton] our goalkeeper coach will pull me in later this week to have a look at my game,” Young said.
“Every game, there’s something you need to improve on and that’s part of the fun of playing an elite sport. I quite enjoy that process.
“If I can come in every day and get something out of it, it leads to something bigger.
“Whether it’s training or recovery, trying to get as much out of everything – hopefully that transfers into the games I play.”
The 29-year-old played 13 Hyundai A-League matches at the start of the season while Theo was nursing a broken wrist.
With the side now unbeaten in five outings since the AFC Asian Cup break, Young said he was making the most of the current opportunity between the sticks.
“When you do get positive results, that breeds confidence and it goes on to more results – to be a part of that is fantastic,” he said.
“Adapting to the league was something that takes time for anyone.
“In saying that, I like to think most of my performances were quite consistent. As a goalkeeper, you tend to look at performances more than results.”
The Roar squad will enjoy a couple of deserved rest days after a demanding travel schedule over the past week. They will return to the training pitch on Thursday ahead of their clash with the Sky Blues at Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.
