Young Roar duo called up for Joeys

Young Roar duo Izaack Powell and Jordan Courtney have been selected  in Australia’s U17 squad to compete next month’s UEFA-hosted youth tournament in Turkey.

The pair will travel with twenty of Australia’s best youth footballers to Antalya in March for matches against the host nation (4 March), Tanzania (6 March), and Guinea (8 March).

The friendly tournament will provide the Joeys with crucial matches and time together ahead of October’s 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru.

Both Powell and Courtney were part of the Young Roar side that claimed the Foxtel Y-League title in January with both players playing 90 minutes in the grand final win over Western Sydney Wanderers.

The pair have also both played a part for our league leading NPL Queensland team who have taken maximum points from their opening two-matches.

Powell became Brisbane Roar’s youngest ever Hyundai A-League player when he played 60-minutes in last weekend’s 2-1 win over defending premiers Sydney FC.

Australia is the only nation outside of UEFA and CAF to receive an invitation to the preparatory tournament in Turkey. The tournament will also feature teams from Morocco, Cameroon, Uganda, Montenegro, Senegal, Angola, Nigeria, and Belarus.

The 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup will be held between October 5 and 27 with the tournament draw set to take place on May 14.
