Young Roar eyeing double over Thunder

Our Young Roar will be hunting a second win of the National Premier Leagues Queensland season over SWQ Thunder FC in Toowoomba this weekend.

The Young Roar started their season on the front foot with a 2-1 win against the Thunder in the opening round and will be looking to pick up a valuable three points at Clive Berghofer Stadium on Saturday night (5pm KO) following a narrow defeat against Moreton Bay United last weekend.

The boys in orange sit in sixth position at the halfway point of the 2018 campaign.

Goalkeeper Macklin Freke, who has played a critical role this campaign between the posts, says the Young Roar are prepared for the physical challenge this Saturday’s opposition will present.

“This is our second matchup against the Thunder, they’re a very physical side and we had a very physical match-up last time,” Freke said.

Freke is one of a number Young Roar squad members who have earned the opportunity to train alongside Brisbane’s Hyundai A-League first-team squad over the last 12 months, which he attributes to BRFC’s high-calibre goalkeeping ranks.

“It’s definitely helped me having such great help from the other keepers at the club, especially guys like Michael Theo, Brendan White and Jamie Young,” Freke added.

“I would love to make the most of any opportunities that come my way. If I am invited to the senior side’s pre-season, I will certainly be there ready to give my all and work hard.”

The Young Roar have remained focused on their goal of continued improvement this season, which Freke says has helped the team stay focused.

“It’s a really tight-knit group, no matter who is in or out of the side the boys always stick together and that help keeps us focused on the job,” Freke continued.

“We’re already improving on last season in terms of clean sheets and goals conceded, so that is a big positive. Last weekend wasn’t ideal, but we are able to switch our focus to this weekend’s game and stay together as a unit,”

“This weekend, same as every other weekend, we intend to go there and win.”
