Young Roar trio selected for FIFA U-17 World Cup

Brisbane Roar is excited and proud to announce that Max Court, Emmett Shaw and Archie Mitchell have been selected in the CommBank Joeys squad for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.

The tournament runs from 19 November to 13 December at the Aspire Zone in Doha. It is Australia’s first appearance at the U-17 World Cup since 2019, after Carl Veart’s side secured qualification at the AFC U17 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia in May.

The Joeys have been drawn in Group C alongside Argentina, Denmark and Mozambique. The top two teams in each group, plus the eight best third-placed sides, advance to the Round of 32.

Court, 17, joined the Roar on a three-year deal from APIA Leichhardt, linking up with the club in September at the end of the NPL NSW season. The attacking midfielder became the youngest player to appear in the Australian Championship at 16 years and 9 months, and scored twice against Iraq in the qualifier that sent the Joeys to the Asian Cup. He then found the net in the 4-0 win over India that put Australia on course for Qatar.

Shaw, 17, signed a three-year scholarship deal ahead of the 2026/27 A-League Men season. The Queenslander debuted against Melbourne City in Round 20 last season at 16 years, 9 months and 3 days, the third youngest player to represent the club at A-League level, and went on to make seven appearances. He came through the Roar’s B Team after joining from Lions FC in 2025, having won the NPL Queensland title there and been named the competition’s Young Player of the Season.

Mitchell, 17, is a left-back who came through the Roar’s B Team after joining from NPL Queensland side Brisbane City in 2025. The Narangba Eagles junior signed a four-year scholarship deal ahead of the 2026/27 season and made his first-team debut in the 3-0 Australia Cup Round of 32 win over Sydney Olympic, playing the full 90 minutes. He was also part of the Joeys squad at the AFC U17 Asian Cup that booked Australia’s place at the World Cup.

Brisbane Roar Sporting Director James Gow said:

“As a club, we are proud to have three of our players being picked for a World Cup is a good reflection of the pathway at this club and the work our coaches put in every day.

“Max has been a big part of the Joeys getting to Qatar, Emmett has already had a taste of A-League Men’s football, and Archie has kept improving since coming into our system from the B team. All three have well and truly earned their spot.

“Playing Argentina, Mozambique and Denmark at a World Cup is experience you can’t recreate at home. We’ll be following them closely and wish them all the best at the tournament.”
