Brisbane Roar will play Melbourne Victory in next Sunday-s Westfield W-League Grand Final at Lakeside Stadium.
After finishing fourth on the competition ladder at season-s end, Brisbane faced the unenviable task of knocking off the newly-crowned Premiers Canberra United on their home turf in yesterday-s semi-final.
It was a pure team effort from the two-time Westfield W-League Champions right from kick-off, defender Kim Carroll setting the scene by scoring the Roar-s opening goal inside four minutes before United fought back to level via Caitlin Munoz in the first half.
FIFA World Player of the Year Nadine Angerer pulled off a top-notch save 10 minutes into the first half to deny Canberra striker Michelle Heyman a goal before stand-in captain Elise Kellond-Knight, who put in a player of the match performance, scored the winner from the edge of the area in the 58th minute.
Victory, who finished the season in third position, won the right to host the Grand Final as the highest-placed qualified team with a 3-2 win over last season-s Champions Sydney FC today with American midfielder Lauren Barnes scoring the winner from the penalty spot.
Next week-s match will be Brisbane-s fifth Westfield W-League Grand Final in the competition-s six seasons of existence.
