Alex Smith departs club for exciting overseas opportunity after record-breaking season

Brisbane Roar can today announce the departure of Ninja A-League Women Head Coach Alex Smith, who takes up an overseas opportunity following a strong 2025/26 campaign.

Smith led his side through an exciting finals series, reaching the Semi Finals after a standout season that marked the first time the club had played finals football in five years.

After joining the club in 2023, Smith took the A-League Women’s program to new heights, headlined by a clear focus on developing young Queensland talent and further cementing the local football pathway. The likes of Daisy Brown, Grace Kuilamu, Zara Kruger and Isabela Hoyos, to name a few, all progressed under his guidance.

Along with his on-field success, last season also saw Smith break the record for most appearances as Ninja A-League Women Head Coach in Brisbane Roar history.

Zac Anderson, Chief Operating Officer, said the club was proud of what Smith had help rebuild. “Alex leaves the Women’s program in a far stronger position than he found it. He’s brought genuine belief and a clear identity to the group, and the way he’s developed young Queensland talent into national team and Matildas players speaks for itself.

“We’re sorry to see him go, but this is a well-earned opportunity and we couldn’t be happier for him. On behalf of everyone at the football club, we thank Alex and wish him every success overseas.”

Speaking on his departure, Smith thanked the club for the opportunity and expressed his excitement for the future. “It’s been a lot of hard work, but I am so grateful to the club, and to all the players and staff I’ve worked with along the way who have been part of the journey.

“We’ve achieved some great steps as a program, developing new youth national team players and Matildas, setting record transfer fees, and maintaining a clear focus on developing and playing Queensland talent. Last season was one to remember, and our results were a reflection of all the progress the program has made.”

“Finally, to our members and supporters, who have been the best in the league every year I’ve been here, celebrating every goal together, I am very thankful for all the support we have received. The sold-out crowds and big wins are truly some of my best memories in football. I leave with lifelong friends and look forward to watching the continued progress of the program.”

The club thanks Alex for his impactful contribution to the A-League Women’s program, and he departs with our best wishes for this new chapter in his coaching career overseas.

The club can confirm the search for Alex’s replacement is already underway, and hopes to announce a new Women’s Head Coach in the near future.
