Defender Tom Aldred has today been named as the newest Brisbane Roar Hyundai A-League captain.

Aldred, who joined the Roar from Scottish Premiership outfit Motherwell over the off-season, has been inducted as Head Coach Robbie Fowler’s first captain at Brisbane Roar.

The defender becomes just the sixth Club captain in Brisbane Roar’s history, walking in the footsteps of past leaders such as games record holder Matt McKay and two-time Championship-winner Matt Smith.

Aldred wore the captain’s armband in both of the Club’s 2019 FFA Cup fixtures and has been a key figure in Robbie Fowler’s squad throughout pre-season preparations.

The 29-year-old will be deputised by striker Roy O’Donovan, who has been handed the vice-captaincy badge.

The Irishman has established himself as one of the Hyundai A-League’s most potent strikers throughout four seasons in the league, and will join Aldred in a leadership position at his new Club for the 2019/20 campaign.

Following the appointment of his first BRFC Club captain, Head Coach Robbie Fowler said,

“The great thing about our squad is that it is full of natural leaders and players that will play for one another, for the badge and for the fans. It is a great honour to have the opportunity to wear the armband and lead the team out, and it’s one that Tom has thoroughly earned,” Head Coach Robbie Fowler said.

“Both Tom & Roy have been a key part of our pre-season preparations, working hard to bring out the best in themselves and their teammates.

“I’m excited for the season ahead and what this team can produce, under the leadership of our new captain and vice-captain, as all Brisbane Roar fans should be.”

CEO David Pourre says it’s a great privilege for Aldred to be joining a small band of players to have donned the armband in Brisbane orange.

“It’s an exclusive group of players who have earned the privilege of wearing the captain’s armband in front of our tremendous fans in orange and a hearty congratulations is in order for both Tom and Roy, from everyone at Brisbane Roar,” CEO David Pourre continued.

“As captain and vice-captain, Tom and Roy will be our squad’s leaders for the upcoming season, and I’m sure that both players, along with our entire Hyundai A-League squad, will be doing their utmost to bring success this season, and to make our members and supporters proud to be part of this great Club.”
