ALW R7 Match Preview: Newcastle Jets v Brisbane Roar

Brisbane Roar will be looking to make it two wins on the bounce as they face Newcastle Jets away at No.2 Sportsground this Saturday afternoon.

Roar are coming off the back of an exciting 2-1 victory over the Central Coast Mariners and will look to take this winning form into Saturday’s match.

WHAT WAS SAID

Head Coach Alex Smith believes sticking to his side’s processes and the way they want to play is the key for the two upcoming fixtures away from home and the busy upcoming January period.

“I think consistency,” Smith said.

“Sticking to our intent, sticking to the way we want to play. It’s a really important thing and a really tough thing to do over the course of a season. That’s the message from me this week during training.”

“It’s a really tough period but I think we’ll be able to get through it with the preparation that we’ve had.”

“Newcastle are a bit of a different team, very high-pressing team. They’ve done quite well this season. For us, it’ll be a new challenge. Confident with the consistency, if we put that together then we’ll be fine and hopefully put in another good performance and bring home the three points.”

After opening the scoring for Roar’s 2-1 win over Central Coast last weekend, Deborah-Anne de la Harpe is determined for three points away from home when the squad travel to Newcastle this Saturday.

“It’s always a physical game against them [Newcastle Jets],” de la Harpe said.

“I think that’s what we can expect. It’s going to be a really physical battle but nothing that we’re not prepared for. I believe we can come away with the win.”

LAST TIME WE MET

In their last meeting, Roar suffered a 3-0 loss to the Jets in Round 17 of the 2023/24 season.

Newcastle’s Sarina Bolden opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a header off a corner set piece.

Bolden scored her second goal of the night in the 77th minute, with just moments later securing a hat trick for the Jets to secure the three points.
