CommBank Socceroos defender joins Brisbane Roar on two-year deal

Brisbane Roar are delighted to welcome CommBank Socceroos left-back Joel King to the club on a two-year deal from Sydney FC.

The 25-year-old made his national team debut in January 2022, in a 4-0 victory over Vietnam during a FIFA World Cup qualifier at AAMI Park in Melbourne. Around the same time, King secured his first move to Europe, joining Odense BK in the Danish Superliga, before returning home and going on to be part of the Socceroos’ squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

King has made over 125 A-League appearances and scored four goals across eight seasons with the Sky Blues, winning two Championships, a Premiership and the 2020/21 A-League Men Young Footballer of the Year award along the way.

Speaking on signing for the club, King said: “I’m really excited to be joining Brisbane Roar. It’s a massive opportunity for me and one that I’m really grateful for.

“From the first conversations I had with the club, I felt like it was a place where I could keep developing as a player and contribute to the team’s success.

“Brisbane is a club with a huge history and passionate supporters, so it’s pretty special to be able to represent a club like this.

“I know as a player that Suncorp has always been a tough place to come and play, so I can’t wait to step out there wearing the colours of this great club.”

Restructuring Roar’s defense, Brisbane Roar Sporting Director James Gow said,

“Joel brings a wealth of A-League experience, has represented Australia at senior international level and still has his best years ahead of him.”

“We’re really pleased to bring him to Brisbane and look forward to seeing the impact he can make both on and off the pitch. Joel has real quality and the mentality to help drive the club forward.”

King will wear the No.16 jersey for the 2026/27 campaign.
