Kirkup: Confidence is building

Versatile defender Bec Kirkup feels her confidence is building after getting the chance for regular minutes in the 2023/24 Liberty A-League season.

After not having the best luck with injuries, Bec Kirkup is pleased with how she has integrated into the squad after signing on at the start of the season from powerhouse NPL club Lions FC.

The 30-year-old was away from football from 2011 to 2020 with a Lisfranc injury, but most recently suffered a stress fracture in her medial malleolus which she has since bounced back from and continues to make a great impact off the bench.

“I can definitely feel my confidence building! Being my first A-League contract and coming into the Roar setting the back end of an injury, it always has it’s challenges, but it’s a really good team here,” Kirkup said.

“Alex has been really great in having confidence in me as a player and backing me, and having confidence in me to do my job when the time comes on the pitch. Looking forward to hopefully more minutes to come!”

Looking forward to Saturday’s clash against fourth-placed Western Sydney, Kirkup reflected on the positive performance in Perth and says the squad is determined for three points.

“Training has been really positive this week. We’re obviously really proud about how we played against Perth, and I think we executed our game plan really well. However, there’s always areas to improve on and that’s where we’ve put our focus this week and now, we look forward to Wanderers this weekend,” she said.

“For us, we want to be able to cement a spot in finals so at this point just maintaining focus and composure and really focusing on our game plan and scoring goals.”

“Wanderers are a good team and they’ve been performing really well, like any team they have their dangerous players that we need to be aware of but I think for us, if we focus on our job and what we need to do and just leaving nothing out on that pitch, we can absolutely get the job done.”
