NPL R11 Match Wrap: Olympic 1-0 Young Roar

Young Roar were edged out 1-0 by Olympic FC in NPL Queensland Round 11 action at Goodwin Park on Sunday evening.

An Oscar Irankeje header in first half stoppage time proved decisive in a cagey affair at Goodwin Park.

Ivan Ozzi found space in behind the Roar defence but couldn’t bend his strike around Ben Wood from a tight angle in the fourth minute before Linden Farr forced Sam Flannery into a flying save with a strike on the half volley from the top of the box five minutes later.

Irankeje who entered the play as a fifteenth minute substitute following an injury to Farr rose highest at the near post to head home from a Riley Thomson-King corner in the fourth minute of first half stoppage time.

Quinn MacNicol entered the fray in the 60th minute and caused the Olympic defence several headaches with his runs in behind.

Roar’s best chance of the second stanza came in the 75th minute when Maieroni found MacNicol from allowing the midfielder to play in James Durrington, who forced Wood into a scrambling save with a first-time strike before Christian Naveen fired an effort on the rebound over the bar from a tight angle.

The Olympic defence held firm to hand Young Roar their second 1-0 defeat in as many week’s with Karl Dodd’s side left sitting in ninth position on the league table following the weekend’s action.

Focus for Roar’s shifts to next Saturday’s clash against Peninsula Power at Meakin Park.
