Brisbane Roar can confirm that Sharn Freier has signed for Bundesliga giant VfL Wolfsburg for a club record women’s fee, departing Roar at the conclusion of the 2024/25 Ninja A-League season.
A local Brisbane City product, Freier made her Brisbane Roar debut in the 2020/21 season where she made 9 appearances and scored her first professional goal in a 6-0 win over Melbourne Victory.
Freier missed the following season due to recovering from an ACL injury, before bouncing back in the 2022/23 season where Freier played 16 matches, scoring 1 goal, and grabbing 2 assists.
However, last season, Freier had a breakout campaign at left wing, starting all 22 games and netting 2 goals and contributing 5 assists.
It was a stellar season in orange for Freier that led to her first call-up for the CommBank Matildas. Since then, Freier has been flying in the green and gold, playing at the Paris 2024 Olympics and scoring 2 international goals recently in friendlies against Chinese Taipei.
Sharn has been playing alongside her twin sister, Laini Freier, this season assisting her on 3 occasions out of her total 4 assists and has netted 2 goals of her own so far this season.
Freier took out 4 awards at the club’s 2023/24 Season Awards Night, including Player of the Year (Kate McShea Medal), Young Player of the Year, Player’s Player and Fans’ Player of the Year after a 2023/24 season to remember.
The Moreton Bay United junior is excited to be signing her first overseas contract with VfL Wolfsburg.
“They are a very successful club with class players, so to be given the opportunity to be a part of something like that, I am extremely grateful,” Freier said.
“This move will give me the opportunity to challenge myself and be a part of a full-time professional environment. I’m stoked for the next chapter and am looking forward to getting stuck in and meeting the team.”
“My time at Brisbane Roar has definitely been such a highlight. Obviously, I signed my first contract with Brisbane and have been here ever since.”
“The staff and players I’ve worked with along the way have always been so supportive and the environment within the Women’s program is something I’m definitely going to miss.”
“It’ll be sad to leave but Brisbane will always be home to me, and I’ll continue to support the girls and Laini moving forward.”
