Brisbane Roar’s Isuzu UTE A-League squad will return to the Fraser Coast for a pre-season training camp and exhibition game in August.
The Roar enjoyed a fulfilling five days of training, fan interaction and match minutes last year and CEO David Pourre is looking forward to returning to the region.
“We have a very strong relationship with the Fraser Coast Regional Council and young players through the Skills Training Centre we have set up,” Pourre said.
The club’s clash with the Wide Bay Select side in 2021 attracted more than 3,000 spectators to the Fraser Coast Sport and Recreation Precinct.
“The regular visits by the Roar help build our reputation as a premier regional Queensland football hub,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.
“The games are also a great treat for local football enthusiasts.”
Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said there were “many benefits” to the Roar’s presence in the Fraser Coast region.
“It is an opportunity for Fraser Coast players to access top-of-the-line coaching and mentoring from the Roar as well as focussing attention on the facilities at the Fraser Coast Sport and Recreation Precinct,” he said.
The visit is part of a three-year sponsorship agreement between the Roar and the Fraser Coast Regional Council.
Under the agreement, the Roar has established a Skills Training Centre at the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct to help develop talented footballers between Gympie and Mackay.
“By attracting state and national teams and fixtures to the Fraser Coast, Council helps develop the skills of locals through coaching clinics, mentoring programs, participation in exhibition matches and just being able to watch games involving elite athletes,” Cr Everard said.
“The visit is also an opportunity for sporting clubs to attract members and increase community participation in sport.”
