Brisbane Roar are delighted to announce that goalkeeper and 2023/24 Gary Wilkins’ Medalist Macklin Freke has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at his hometown club through to the end of the 2025/26 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
Freke was also awarded the Fans’ Player of the Year and Outkast Outstanding A-League Men’s Player of the Year at the club’s annual Awards Night.
Brisbane born, Freke joined the BRFC Academy from Brisbane City and signed a scholarship contract in 2019. He made his Senior debut in the 2020/21 season in Round 4 against Newcastle Jets.
His potential had earlier been recognised with selection in the Young Socceroos squad that competed at the AFC U19 Championship in late 2018.
After consistent performances in pre-season and his hard-working mentality, Freke established himself as starting goalkeeper for the 2023/24 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
The shot-stopper has made 44 appearances with 8 clean sheets for the club so far, with many more to come for the 25-year-old after committing his future to Brisbane Roar.
Freke, who grew up supporting Brisbane, said it is a privilege to have signed on with the club.
“It’s a huge honour and privilege to have extended my time here at the club. There’s so many people I owe thanks to who have each played a significant part along the way and helped me build a platform that allowed me to perform at a level and earn this contract,” Freke said.
“It wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance of my coaches throughout the youth team to first team and the unwavering support provided by family and friends. A big shoutout to the fans who have made me feel so loved during my time here,” he added.
“I look forward to continuing to build on this season with this team and this coach and achieving success in the coming years. I have no doubts that this club will continue to improve and move forward.”
