Brisbane Roar welcome goalkeeper Tierney Sunderland from Virginia United FC

Brisbane Roar are pleased to announce the signing of goalkeeper Tierney Sunderland for the remainder of the 2023/24 Liberty A-League season on a scholarship contract.

Gladstone-born, Roar welcomes young Queenslander Sunderland from local club Virginia United FC where she currently plays in the FQPL 1 season. She previously played for Brisbane City for three years, most recently winning both the 2023 Grand Final and Premiership last year.

The 23-year-old is delighted to be training with the Liberty A-League squad and looks forward to developing as a player and flourishing in a professional environment.

Roar Goalkeeper Coach Dale Hill first coached Sunderland at Brisbane City and will continue to work with her at Roar.

“I’m so stoked to be training with the squad and I’m excited to learn some new things and be under Dale again. He was my coach back in City a few years ago now and I learned so much from him and developed so much as a player so I’m keen to work with him again and just learn and grow,” Sunderland said.

Sunderland will reunite with some familiar faces after playing with Kijah Stephenson and Sharn Freier at Brisbane City but is excited to meet her other teammates and settle into the squad.

She aims to relish the opportunity and hopes to attain a full contract next season but is pleased to be alongside the squad for the remaining two games of the 2023/24 Liberty A-League campaign.

“The goal is to show what I’ve got, even though there’s only a few weeks left of the season, just show the team what I’ve got so hopefully next season I’m questioned for the squad again,” Sunderland said.

“Basically just being in that professional environment is unreal, all the testing I’ve done leading up to training has been an awesome experience. I’ve never done that stuff before, just learning and getting into that professional environment amongst a good bunch of solid girls.”
